It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news of the sudden closure of Perry’s Cafe. According to San Diego Union-Tribune, the beloved roadside diner on Pacific Highway closed its doors for good on Monday, ending its 39-year run. This closure comes earlier than expected, as the original closing date was set for August 15th. Perry’s owner, Perry Eulmi, shared that her staff was experiencing burnout, which prompted the decision to close early.

While it’s sad to see a local institution like Perry’s close its doors, a 223-dwelling housing development will be built in its place. The site, including the restaurant building and parking lot, has been leased to Viewpoint Development, LLC. The new housing complex will incorporate some elements of the mid-century structure that housed Perry’s.

This closure is a reminder of the changing landscape of San Diego. While it’s sad to see Perry’s go, it’s exciting to see how this space will be revitalized.
